La Traviata tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan who abandons her libertine life for love with Alfredo Germont. Act I opens at a glittering salon where Violetta, though ill, is the life of the party. Alfredo's sincere devotion moves her, but she fears love will destroy her. In Act II, Alfredo's father Giorgio pressures Violetta to leave so the family's honor is preserved. She sacrifices everything and returns to her former protector. Act III finds Violetta dying of consumption; Alfredo, learning the truth too late, rushes to her side for a final, heartbreaking reconciliation. Verdi's score is among the most beloved in opera — intimate, passionate, and devastating.
